Greetings! Welcome to the new Village website, and welcome to my blog. Throughout the years I have named my public written commentaries REKINDLING THE FLAME, based on a portion of 2 Timothy 1:6. Someone asked me why I use the heading and quote for my public musings. Glad she asked! It’s a reminder to me of an important task I often need to do.
The Holy Spirit is sometimes compared to a flame or a fire, such as in Acts 2:3. Paul told his young associate, Timothy, to stir up the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, in his life. The Greek word for “stir up” means to “rekindle.” Why would Timothy need to do some rekindling of the Spirit?
I can’t speak directly for Paul or Timothy here, but I have my own humble observation. The Holy Spirit is always within us, but the divine flame is often more like a tiny pilot light. That’s our fault. We “turn down” the blaze of the Spirit with our self-interest, misguided priorities and complacency. We “rekindle” the flame by surrendering to God and reaffirming and living out, “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That enables the Spirit to blaze up within us. We become empowered once again, more loving, more joyful. Of course, this requires some personal effort. I’m hoping that at least some of what I write will be a good “fireplace poker” to help “rekindle the flame” in your own life. Not that all that I say is spiritual perfection! Nor am I assuming that you are in dire need of my own ramblings. Maybe if nothing else, it will spark a thought about where you are in your own spiritual journey and give us an opportunity to dialogue and “rekindle” each other.
Thanks for taking a peek. Until later…..grace and peace to you! Rik
